How it works

Two panes. A sealed cavity. A properly built frame.

A double-glazed unit — technically known as an Insulated Glass Unit, or IGU — is made from two panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer and an insulating cavity. The cavity contains air, or optionally an inert gas such as argon, depending on the specification.

Continuous edge seals protect the cavity from moisture ingress. The IGU is then installed into a steel-reinforced uPVC frame, which contributes its own thermal insulation to the completed window or door.

Performance is a whole-system property — the glass configuration, spacer type, gas fill, frame profile and installation quality all matter. Comparing a glass-unit rating with a whole-window rating is not a like-for-like comparison.

The insulated glass units used in our double-glazed windows and doors are supplied by Tough Glass, a Perth-based glass manufacturer that fabricates its ToughEco IGU range locally. That means the DGU in every Hybrid window is manufactured in Western Australia — no interstate shipping, no long lead times on standard configurations.

Depending on the selected project specification, the sealed cavity may contain air or argon; the spacer may be a warm-edge thermoplastic, a Super Spacer or aluminium; and the glass configuration itself may combine clear, toughened, laminated, acoustic and Low-E performance glass in the panes you need.

Hybrid Windows remains responsible for the consultation, measure, frame fabrication, complete window manufacture, installation and aftercare — Tough Glass supplies the DGU component itself.

Glass-unit Rw values are set by the glass supplier; the whole-window and installed-building acoustic result depends on the complete system, including frame, seals and the building envelope. Double glazing questions we get every week.

What is the difference between an IGU and double glazing?
There is no functional difference — 'IGU' (Insulated Glass Unit) is the technical name for a double-glazed glass panel. It refers to two or more panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer and insulating cavity.
Is double glazing suitable for Perth's climate?
Yes. Perth combines hot summers with mild winters and coastal exposure, so both solar-heat management and thermal insulation matter. An appropriately specified IGU — often with a Low-E coating — helps reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss on cool nights.
Does double glazing keep summer heat out?
It can significantly reduce solar and radiant heat gain compared with single glazing, particularly when a Low-E coating is specified. The result also depends on window orientation, external shading, glass configuration and the whole window system, not the glass alone.
Can double glazing reduce traffic or aircraft noise?
An IGU with the right glass and lamination can reduce airborne noise transmission. It will not make a room soundproof — noise reduction depends on the whole building envelope, not the glass alone.
Does argon improve insulation?
Argon is denser than air and transfers heat more slowly across the sealed cavity, which can improve centre-of-glass U-value. The gain is most meaningful when paired with a Low-E coating.
What is Low-E glass?
Low-E ('low emissivity') glass has a microscopic metallic-oxide coating that reflects long-wave radiant heat while letting visible light through. Depending on the coating type, it can reduce solar heat gain, reduce heat loss, or both.
Can existing Perth windows be replaced with double glazing?
In most cases, yes. We start with an on-site measure to check the existing opening, the frame's structural condition and the access route, then confirm which uPVC replacement profile is appropriate for the reveal.
Can double glazing stop condensation?
It can reduce the likelihood of condensation forming on the interior pane by keeping the interior surface warmer, but it does not eliminate condensation. Persistent condensation usually points to a room ventilation or humidity issue.
